SUMMER ARTS PROGRAMS

The information provided below is subject to change due to COVID-19. All decisions will be based on what will keep the students and staff safe while giving them the best experience possible.

 

In accordance with the current CDC and NJ Department of Health guidelines, the College will not require COVID-19 vaccinations, weekly COVID-19 testing, or masking to attend Tomato Patch this summer.

 

We strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated and to continue to wear masks when in public areas of the college, such as the cafeteria.

Tomato Patch 2023

The grades listed below are for the grade the student will be entering into in the 2023-2024 academic year.

• Session I - Grades 8-12: June 26-July 20 (No classes on July 3 and 4)
• Session II - Grades 4-7: July 24-August 10
• Master Class in Acting Session I - Grades 8-12: June 26-July 21 (No classes on July 3 and 4)
• Master Class in Acting Session 2 - Grades 8-12: July 24-August 11

Each session cost:
$1,075 for Session I.
$1,050 for Session II.

A $50 discount is available for second child when both are registered at the same time.

Tomato Patch classes run Monday through Friday, 8:45am - 4:15pm,
Master Class classes run Monday through Friday, 8:45 am - 4:15pm.

Session I: All sessions are $1,075.00. A $100 deposit is required to register. The remainder can be paid in one lump sum or in one, two, or three installments, depending on the date registered. Payment dates are April 12, May 17, and June 14. NOTE: Starting on May 31, 2023, the payment plan will no longer be available and payment must be made in full when registering.

Session II: All sessions are $1,050.00. A $100 deposit is required to register. The remainder can be paid in one lump sum or in one, two, or three installments, depending on the date registered. Payment dates are May 2, June 6, and July 5. NOTE: Starting on June 20, 2023, the payment plan will no longer be available and payment must be made in full when registering.

Before and after care is available at an additional cost:

Before Care: Starts at 7:15 am. $50 per week
After Care: Ends at 6:00 pm . $75 per week

Before and After Care is available on a per day basis. Please email the office to arrange for per-diem before and after care at projects@mccc.edu.

Tomato Patch Session Structure

Students will have the opportunity to choose from one of four majors: Acting, Vocal, Dance, or Visual Arts. Each morning will be spent in a major class.

Students will also choose from a list of classes for the four afternoon elective classes in Acting, Vocal, Dance, Visual Arts and Video Production.

An Evening of the Arts Performance will be held on the last night of the session in which the students will perform what they have learned in their classes for their parents.

• Session I: Thursday, July 20
• Session II: Thursday, August 10

Master Class Session Structure

Acting Master Class students will have the opportunity to deepen their study of acting as a craft, both for the stage and screen. Students will also explore acting as a profession, and learn about the "biz" of the business.

An Evening of the Arts Performance will be held on the last night of the session in which the students will perform scenes they have worked on during the course of the session.

Tomato Patch Schedule

Morning Majors

 

Period 1 (9:00-10:00) and Period 2 (10:10-11:25)

Student will select one major.

ACTING: Techniques of creating a role and working on stage as well as exercises to develop focused concentration and relaxation.

VOCAL: Emphasis is placed on projection, articulation, breath control and pitch.

DANCE: Encompasses modern forms and styles of expression in contemporary and classical dance.

VISUAL ARTS: Three- and two-dimensional design and painting and 3D sculptures will be created by combining shapes and forms using a variety of material such as wood, paper-mache, plaster, wire, Paris craft and fabric. The emphasis is on construction and the fundamentals of color and composition.

Afternoon Electives

PLEASE NOTE: The numbers in parentheses, such as (15), at the end of some class descriptions is the class member limit for that class.

 

Period 3 (12:00-1:00)

2D ART: Students will create painting, designs, and use printmaking techniques. Color, composition, balance, and creativity are the emphasis of this course. Projects will be inspired from nature, drawing, life, photographs, and imagination. Demonstrations and critiques will supplement classroom work. (20)

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA: Students will explore their performance skills for stage and learn the differences between stage acting and film acting. (20)

CHILDREN'S THEATER: Students will learn basic acting principles and participate in selected scenes from plays written for children. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in the The Evening of the Arts.

THEATER DANCE: Students are exposed to several styles of dance that are encountered in the production of a musical. These include correct period dances and interpretive dance styles. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts.

VIDEO PRODUCTION: Students will learn all aspects of video production, including storyboarding, filming, producing, directing, and choosing onscreen talent. Students will create a video for display at The Evening of the Arts gallery exhibit. (20)

VOCAL SOLOS: Students will work with the instructor to develop a polished vocal solo appropriate for their range that can be used as an audition piece. (15)

 

Period 4 (1:05-2:05)

COMEDY: Students will explore and hone their skills in three areas of comedy: dramatic, physical, and stand-up. (15)

DRAWING: PEN, INK, AND PASTELS: Students will explore perspective, shape, line, form, and value. Pencil and charcoal will be used to create drawings and still lifes. Landscapes will be created using pastels. Pen and ink techniques will be introduced. Demonstrations and critiques will supplement classroom work. (20)

JAZZ DANCE: Students will explore the fundamentals of jazz dance techniques with emphasis on syncopated rhythms and body movement isolations. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts.

MUSICAL COMEDY: Students will explore principles of comedy, incorporating the elements of wit and physical comedy with movement and music to develop a short presentation.

VIDEO PRODUCTION: Students will explore the basic concepts of video editing, including learning to use editing software, working with footage on a timeline, continuity, sequencing, and green screening. Class will work on video from Video Production classes, as well as their own videos. (20)

VOCAL ENSEMBLE: Students will learn, polish, and perform vocal selections arranged in three- and four-part harmony. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts. (65)

 

Period 5 (2:10-3:10)

3D DESIGN: Students will create three-dimensional sculptures by combining shapes and forms using a variety of materials such as wood, paper mache, plaster, wire, Paris craft, and fabric. The emphasis is on construction, discovery, and experimentation in order to create original pieces of 3D art works. The projects will be different from the morning class. (20)

ADVANCED ACTING: Students will refine their performance skills, discuss text analysis, and develop scene interpretation skills. (15)

MUSICAL THEATER: Students will explore and rehearse small scenes and numbers from musicals. Recommended for students with an interest in theater and/or voice. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts. (65)

TAP DANCE: Students will learn the basics of this musical theater staple dance form. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts. ***Students must have their own tap shoes.*** (20)

WEB VIDEO: Students will learn the technical and aesthetic concepts necessary to create a safe and fun video for YouTube, Facebook, or a web page. Course will include planning, production, and post-production, including uploading and compression techniques. Privacy, broadcasting, and sharing dos and don'ts will also be covered. (15)

WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYHOW?: Students will enhance their improvisation skills and deal with a large variety of improvised situations using their imaginations as a springboard.

 

Period 6 (3:15-4:15)

A CAPPELLA SINGING: Students will be given the opportunity to sing without an instrument net. The class will include exposing the students to different styles of a cappella singing, teaching the students how to emulate instrumental sounds with their voices and creating their own a capella arrangements to their favorite songs, Singing a cappella is perfect for improving not only vocal skills, but also ear training, tuning, and blending with other voices This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts.

CHILDREN'S THEATER: Students can learn basic acting principles and participate in selected scenes from plays written for children. This is a performance class. Students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts.

CREATIVE THEATER: Students will reimagine scenes from their favorite stories and create an original play focusing on the invention and development of their own character and the magic of ensemble storytelling.

HIP HOP: Students will learn this high-energy urban street movement. One of the most popular dance disciplines, hip hop and hip hop influences can be seen throughout popular culture, including music videos. This is a performance class. The students will appear on stage in The Evening of the Arts. (30)

MAKING MUSIC VIDEOS: Students will express their creativity and bring a song to life, the class will choose a song, create a concept, shoot, and edit a music video. Course will include EFP (Electronic Field Production) green screen techniques and basic post production. The final edit will be included in the camp DVD. (20)

COMIC BOOK CREATIONS: Create your very own comic book with detailed illustrations. Learn how to pencil, ink and color your own comic book panel, draw original comic book characters, and learn the basics of drawing comic book people and animals.
